Best Offline Notes Apps for Android in 2026

A practical comparison of the best offline, local-first notes apps for Android. Privacy-focused, no account required, with full data export.

July 15, 2026 · NexGen Orbit Labs

Most note-taking apps on the Play Store want something from you before you write a single word: an email, a phone number, a cloud account. Some Android notes apps skip all of it. This one compares apps that work offline, need no account, and let you export your data.

Why offline notes matter

When your notes live on someone else’s server, three things happen:

  1. You depend on their uptime. If the sync service goes down, your notes are in limbo.
  2. You accept their privacy policy. Your thoughts are processed, indexed, and potentially used for analytics.
  3. You lose control of export. Export usually exists, limited to the formats and versions the developer chose to support.

Offline notes apps flip this: your data lives on your device. You decide when to back up, what to export, and where your data goes.

What to look for in an offline notes app

Six things matter more than the app’s icon:

  • No account required. Open the app, start writing.
  • Local storage by default. No mandatory cloud sync. If sync exists, it should be opt-in.
  • Full export. At minimum: plain text and Markdown. Ideally: CSV, PDF, and JSON backup.
  • Search. Past 20 notes, scrolling stops working and search starts.
  • Categories or tags. Organization shouldn’t require a folder structure from a file manager.
  • Dark mode. Battery drain and late-night reading make it a baseline, not a feature.

Crystal Notes

Crystal Notes is our app, so weigh this section accordingly. It does the following:

  • Rich text editor with headings, lists, checklists, quotes, code blocks and links
  • Categories, pinning, sorting and trash recovery (30-day window)
  • Full-text search across every note
  • Export to TXT, Markdown, CSV, PDF and Excel
  • JSON backup and restore so the data stays portable
  • Light, dark and custom color themes
  • 14 interface languages: English, Ukrainian, Arabic, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese and Turkish
  • No cloud sync, no account, full export in six formats
  • Sentry for crash reporting only, with note-related fields scrubbed before an event leaves the device

Crystal Notes runs on Android 7.0 and above. It’s completely free on Google Play.

Other offline notes apps worth considering

Markleaf

Markleaf is a privacy-focused notes app on F-Droid. It edits Markdown, keeps a clean interface and stores everything locally. A solid choice if you prefer plain Markdown and don’t need rich text formatting.

Strengths: open source, on F-Droid, Markdown-first Limitations: no rich text, limited export options, small community

Lomo

Lomo is a lightweight notes app built for speed. It opens fast, syncs locally and stays out of your way. A good choice if you want minimal features and maximum speed.

Strengths: fast launch, minimal UI, no clutter Limitations: fewer export formats, no rich text, limited organization

Standard Notes

Standard Notes is the most established name in privacy-focused notes. It uses end-to-end encryption and syncs across devices. Its free tier is plain text only, though: rich text, spreadsheets and other editors need a paid subscription.

Strengths: E2E encryption, cross-platform, established Limitations: very limited free tier, rich text needs a subscription, account required for sync

If you want something else, pick by what you need: Standard Notes if you want encryption and cross-device sync (paid plan), Markleaf if you want open source and Markdown. Our guide to what makes an Android app architecturally private covers the difference between an app that works offline and an app that cannot collect your data even if it wanted to.
